Dr. Hanage is a Leader in the Evolution and Epidemiology of Infectious Disease

Cambridge, Mass. – June 28, 2021 – Biobot Analytics, a leader in wastewater epidemiology,
today announced that William Hanage, Associate Professor of Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan
School of Public Health, is joining the company as Scientific Advisor.

“Dr. Hanage’s expertise and hands-on experience in pathogen evolution and computational
epidemiology will be a major asset, and we are thrilled to welcome him as a Scientific Advisor,”
said Mariana Matus, PhD, CEO and Cofounder of Biobot Analytics. “Dr. Hanage’s perspective will
be especially helpful in this stage of the COVID-19 pandemic as new variants continue to emerge
and Biobot expands its efforts to build a national wastewater monitoring network.”

Dr. Hanage’s work in the Department of Epidemiology and in the Center for Communicable
Disease Dynamics at Harvard focuses on pathogen evolution and population dynamics for a
variety of infectious diseases. He is particularly interested in using an evolutionary framework
such as methods derived from population genetics to inform epidemiology.

“During the pandemic Biobot Analytics has proven itself a leader in wastewater epidemiology,
providing early warnings of COVID-19 infections and improved situational awareness that have
supported decision makers through some of the most challenging circumstances any of us have
experienced,” said Dr. Hanage. “Looking to the future, this technology can help us not only to end
this pandemic but also prevent future infectious disease outbreaks and keep our country safe
from another crisis.”

Dr. Hanage completed his post-doctoral study at the University of Oxford and Imperial College
London, before being awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship. Prior to joining
the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, he worked as a Reader in the department of
Infectious Disease Epidemiology at Imperial College London, where he developed multilocus
sequence typing and analysis for the study of bacterial pathogens and species, as well as means
of analyzing data developed using this method. In 2012, he received the Fleming Prize for
research in Microbiology and was the recipient of a 2012 ICAAC Young Investigator Award from
the American Society for Microbiology.
